James Cameron's sci-fi epic, "Avatar" has been considered a phenomenon. Although no official "Avatar" costumes have been released yet, you can still put together your own look with makeup, a wig and some accessories to become one of the Na'vi. This makeup will be for Neytiri, but you can modify it to resemble any of the characters you may want to dress as. One thing to remember. Doing good makeup is more than just slapping on several coats of blue face paint. Take your time and this can look really good!

Putting together your Neytiri Avatar Na'vi costume and makeup

Step 1: Pick up a pair of elf ears. Paint them with a coat of blue acrylic paint that will match your makeup scheme. When they're dry, apply a lighter shade of blue (could be the same blue mixed with white) in "stripes" across the ear in a zebra-like pattern.

Step 2: Allow the ears to dry since you will be applying them near the front of your temples/forehead with spirit gum or appliance putty. Wash and dry your face thoroughly so the ears stick. Use the photo of one of the Na'vi to get an idea of where they will sit on your head and then glue 'em on!

Step 3: Wash your hands and put in a pair of yellow contacts. You can purchase these online or at specialty stores. If you're not a wearer of contacts, have a friend help you put them in... Just wash your hands first! Any dust, stray hairs or debris on those babies will make your eyes water and makeup run later on.

Step 4: This step is completely optional depending on how hardcore you want to take your makeup. The Na'vi don't have eyebrows. While you could just paint your makeup on over them, if you don't have prosthetic appliances to cover them, a neat trick is to take a giant glue stick (or the spirit gum) and go over your eyebrows with it, rubbing the stick in the opposite direction of eyebrow growth. Let it dry and then do it one or two more times (depending on how thick your brows are). With your brows flat against your skin with a layer of "glue skin" over them, you can have a nice, flat surface to apply the makeup with, without worrying about any facial hair peeking through.

Step 5: Apply blue cream makeup in thin layers to your face, neck and chest. You can also blend some of the makeup up and around your Elf Ears on your forehead/temples, so long as they're dry to get a smoother look. If you feel like you need more "blue" coverage, apply another thin layer. It stays on better to do it in stages and doesn't look like you just glopped it on.

Step 6: Mix together some white cream makeup with the blue to create a lighter shade. Use one of your paint brushes or makeup brushes to apply it in thin stripes, concentrated mostly at the temples of your face, then drawing it outward in thin stripes.

Step 7: To give the broad, alien/cat like nose that the Na'vi have, take the lighter shade of blue and paint directly down in a straight line from the inner corner of your eye to outer edge of your nose. Blend it with the brush. Repeat on your other eye/nose area. Then, take the light blue mixture and paint a stripe down the center of your nose, blending a bit for a "highlighted" effect.

Step 8: Add the lighter blue makeup around your eyes and blend with the darker shade. Then do some "zebra stripes" with the light blue on your forehead, extending up from the bridge of your nose.

Step 9: Take a skinny paintbrush or makeup brush and dip it in the plain white cream makeup. Dot it along your forehead and cheeks below your eyes to create the "freckles" the Na'vi sport.

Step 10: Wait for your makeup to dry. Put on a braided wig with or without beads... OR, if you really want to go nuts, get your own long brown wig and braid it with your own beads and feathers for a customized touch. However, a Beaded wig can do the trick just as well. Be careful that you don't hit your ears with it and knock them off! (As a test-run beforehand, try on the wig and see where you want your ears to be so they're very visible and not hidden by the wig.)

Step 11: Put on a blue bodysuit, or, if you can't find one, go to a dance store or outlet store and pick up a nude colored bodysuit and dye it with RIT dye. You can pick up RIT dye at a fabric store, or sometimes a drug store. Follow the directions on the packet to dye your white or nude colored bodysuit blue. You can add a striped/tyedye effect once your suit is dry and then go for a SECOND round of RIT dye after you tie the sleeves, legs, and body part with rubber bands. The dye won't take on the banded areas and you get instant stripe-effects on the body like the Na'vi have.

Step 12: Put on a brown bikini or any outfit you want to dress like the Na'vi of your choice. Decorate your arms with faux leather bands or strips of braided brown fabric. Dangle beads and/or feathers from them for effect.

Step 13: It's a lot of preparation, but much more simple than you would think to look like Nytiri or your other favorite Avatar Na'vi! Good luck!

Things You'll Need

Putting together your Lady Gaga (Red Lace) costume

Step 1: Put on a curly blonde wig. You will want it to hit at roughly shoulder length, so you may or may not want to cut it to suit your look.
Step 2: Make your own Red Lady Gaga crown. Take a large piece of cardboard or stiff posterboard. Measure the circumference of your head and just how big you will need the crown to be with a piece of measuring tape. Draw a straight line that will be the "base" of your crown. From there, draw tall "spikes" on the crown and cut it out.
Step 3: Once your crown is cut out, begin painting it red with acrylic paint and a paint brush. As it's drying, you can add red sequins, crystals, or even red lace to give it some extra punch, using the paint as a sort of glue to help everything adhere.
Step 4: Once your crown is dry, glue it together so that it will sit proudly atop your head over your wig.
Step 5: Put on a red dress in either lace or a solid color, preferably with a high, mock turtleneck neckline. (Chances are, you don't want to be as daring as Lady Gaga and won't want your undies hanging out, so there's no shame in going with a solid red dress!)
Step 6: Put on a pair of red lace gloves or even red satin gloves to coordinate with your dress.
Step 7: Next, you'll need a pair of red lace tights to wear beneath your dress for more of a monochrome look.
Step 8: Put on a pair of red boots or a tall pair of red heels to wear over your tights.

Step 9: Last, but not least, the final finishing touch is to drape a piece of red stretch lace fabric over your face. Pick up a half yard of this type of fabric at a local fabric or craft store. It's relatively inexpensive and provides the ultimate touch to this Lady Gaga look! Situate the lace underneath your crown so that it can be anchored there by your headpiece. Then, tuck it into the high neckline of your dress so that it's draped over your face tightly. Prep your skin:

You want to start with a primer, this will give your skin a smooth finish. We recommend using M.A.C. Prep + Prime Skin because it contains silicone, removes shine, and works great when blending your foundation. Use a liquid foundation like Make Up For Ever HD Foundation in a color that matches your skin tone. Once you are finished applying your foundation, set it with a loose powder.

Lady Gaga Eye Makeup:

For this look, we recommend using Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow in Black Magic because it contains both a matte white cream eye shadow and a shimmering black cream eye shadow.

Use your finger to apply the matte, white cream eye shadow in uneven amounts around the entire eye. Apply more in some areas, very little in others, and carelessly blend. Make sure that you have full coverage when working towards the lash line and the bottom rim of your eye. If necessary, go over this area with a white pencil eyeliner.

With a lip brush, add a black cream eye shadow beneath the lash line of your bottom lid (leave your lower rim and the top of your lower lash line white). Add the black cream eye shadow to the upper lid, bringing it from the inner corner of the eye up to the crease, then swoop it down and out toward the outer corner of the eye to create a cat eye shape.

Using your finger or a clean brush, blend the outer edge of the black eye shadow with the white layer beneath it, sweeping back and forth gently so that it lightens the intensity of the black color.

For an intense, long-lasting black color, set the cream shadow by patting a black eye shadow powder (try M.A.C. Shadow Pigment in Dark Soul) on top of it. This should follow the same shape that you made with black cream shadow in step #2, but it should be about 1/4 of an inch smaller, leaving the blended black-white portions un-touched.

Use a Q-tip to swipe a wedge-shape out of the outer corner of the eye shadow you have applied. You can leave this wedge skin-tone or fill it in with more of the white eye shadow, depending on how much white you have in the surrounding area.
Finish by sprinkling a little bit of loose glitter over closed eyes. It doesn't matter if you have fallout on the face or body since you will be adding more glitter to these areas later.

Lady Gaga Lips:

Wear a coral-tinted lip stain and cover it with your favorite sheer lip gloss.

Highlight Your Skin:

Pinch a sponge applicator so that it's crinkled and condensed. Keep your sponge applicator crinkled and dab it in a white cream eye shadow or in M.A.C. Pro Studio Fix in Shivering White. Un-pinch the sponge and let it expand back to its regular size. Apply this to your face by placing it in random areas, leaving some gaps of bare skin. Apply more if necessary to build spots of textured, uneven white. Add more texture by dabbing the cream with the bristles of a stiff makeup brush.

Sprinkle loose glitter on random patches of skin. Let it naturally fall and disperse. If you want a little more staying power, spray a light veil of hairspray over the glitter to keep it in place.

1. To make patterns, draw a grid of 2-inch squares on kraft paper; copy templates by hand onto it. Using fish pattern, cut one piece of orange felt and foam with front scoop neckline and one piece orange felt and foam with back neckline. Use orange part of pattern to cut one front and one back from orange felt for lining. For the front, layer foam, then whole felt, then half felt; stitch around top from notch A to notch B, with 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn right side out so foam is between felt pieces. Quilt front from top to bottom, making rows of 4 1/2-inch scallops 2 1/2 inches apart. Repeat with remaining pieces for back. Place front and back together, right sides facing. Sew around tail from notch A to notch B, with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn right side out. Sew Velcro fastener dots at shoulders and underarms, as shown on template.

2. Use hat pattern to cut two pieces of felt, one orange and one pink, and one piece of foam. Layer pieces: foam, pink felt, and orange felt. Sew top, bottom, and one side closed with 1/4-inch seam allowance. Turn right side out. Quilt as above. Fold in half, pink side out; sew along short edge. Turn orange side out. Cut eye from black and white felt scraps. Glue on as shown.

Little Red Riding Hood How-To1. Sew or glue eyelet trim to hoodie, all around hood and over zipper. Hold in place with clothespins until dry.

2. To create the braids, measure three 3-yard strands of yarn. Fold the three strands in half. Tie a small piece of yarn around the top, near the loop, to create one 6-strand bundle of yarn. Repeat twice to make 3 bundles. Tie the three bundles together at the top. Clamp the bundles to table or stable surface and braid. Tie red grosgrain ribbon to bottom of braid. Repeat to make a second braid.

3. Glue braids to inside bottom of hood.

4. To make the cape, start with a piece of red fabric that is at least 22-by-22 inches. Create a compass by tying a piece of string to tailor chalk. Hold the string at a point 20 inches from the chalk, place in a corner of the fabric, and draw an arc on the fabric with the chalk. Use a plate to trace the neckline. Cut the cape from the fabric.

5. Use iron-on hem tape to keep the edges of the cape from fraying. Glue eyelet trim to the bottom of the cape. Secure neckline of cape around base of hood with fabric glue.

Big Bad Wolf How-To1. Print wolf templates on heavyweight paper. Cut out paper templates. Trace templates onto felt that coordinates with the colors of the template, and cut pieces from felt.
Tip: Use double-sided tape to temporarily hold templates onto felt as you trace.

2. To make ears, fold a brown pipe cleaner to create a triangle with 3 1/2-inch sides, and a 2 1/2-inch base. Twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together to complete triangle. Fit the pipe cleaner triangle to the edges of the felt "inside" ear piece, and glue together. Glue the "outside" ear piece to the felt within the triangle. Bend the base of the triangle into a small arc to create the shape of an ear.

3. Attach ears to the hoodie with fabric glue.

4. Assemble felt eyes and nose as shown in the template. Attach to hoodie with fabric glue.

5. Glue top teeth and gums to top inside of hood, arranged as shown in the template. Glue bottom teeth to bottom inside of hood, on either side of zipper.

6. To create nose wrinkles, draw diagonal lines of glue originating from the top center of the nose on the inside of the hood. Pinch and hold the outside of the hood over the glue lines to form the wrinkles.

Homemade Kids' Halloween Costumes: How to Make the Knight and Dragon Costume

Knight and Dragon
Aha! To the dragon's lair! Via the baking aisle! These two make an imposing knight and dragon team. The breastplate and the dragon's scales are candy cups; the leg and arm armor is cut from aluminum pans; a folded pie tin is the hilt of the foil-clad broadsword. No need to fear the baby dragon she breathes milk and her spikes are made of sponges.

Tools and Materials
2 packs foil candy cups
1 box brass paper fasteners
1 foil roasting pan
3 foil pie pans
1 roll aluminum foil
12 kitchen sponges

Breastplate How-To
You'll need 100 silver foil candy cups; flatten and halve each. Lay a 2-foot piece of 1/2-inch-wide double-fold bias tape in a U shape.
1. Using craft glue, attach a row of half circles inside fold, leaving room for ties. Using transparent tape, add on rows of foil cups until desired size is reached.
2. Wear over gray sweatshirt, if desired.

Headband How-To
1. Glue together overlapping foil half circles; stud with brass paper fasteners.
2. Cover fastener prongs on inside with cloth tape for comfort.
3. Make a duct-tape belt (sticky sides facing) to cinch sweatshirt.

Armor How-To
1. Shape pieces from foil pans. Turn edges in; staple ribbon to corners to tie. Use mini pie pans for knees.
Dragon Spikes and Tail How-To
1. Using craft glue, line the middle of the back of a sleeper and a matching hat with gold-colored candy cups cut in quarters.
2. Cut tail shape from cardboard; insert into a leg cut from a pair of red tights. Stuff with batting; stitch closed.
3. Sew wide end to sleeper. Hot-glue more gold cups to tail. Cut sponges into wave shapes; hot-glue along spine.

How To Carve a Turkey on Howcast

Tradition says slice at the table, but we think your guests will just as happy with a pretty, plated presentation.

You Will Need

A cooked turkey
A cutting board
A carving knife
A serving tray

Step 1: Carve in the kitchen

Keep the turkey in the kitchen after it’s cooked to let it cool slightly and the juices redistribute. Slicing that bird is a greasy, messy proposition, so keep your guests out of the splatter zone.

Step 2: Remove the legs

Place the turkey on a cutting board breast-side up. As you pull one leg away from the bird, slice through the skin and the joint connecting it to the body. Repeat with the other leg.

Tip : Use a long, sharp carving knife. A short, dull blade will take longer, shred the meat, and increase your chance of injury.

Step 3: Cut the leg meat

Cut through the leg joint to separate the thigh from the drumstick, and set the drumstick aside. Cut as much meat as you can off the thighbone, trying to keep it in one large piece. Cut against the grain to create slices about a quarter of an inch thick.

Step 4: Cut off the wings

Pull one wing away from the body of the bird, and cut through the skin and the joint. Repeat with the other wing, and set the wings aside.

Step 5: Remove the breast in halves

Remove the breast in halves. Use the breastbone as your guide, and cut down one side of it — as close to the bone as you can — so that the meat comes off in one piece. Repeat with the other half of the breast.

Step 6: Cut the turkey breast

Place both halves of the turkey breast skin-side up on your cutting board. Slice them against the grain at a slight angle into pieces about a quarter of an inch thick.

Step 7: Assemble and serve

On a serving platter, assemble the meat, and separate the white meat (the breast and the wings) from the dark meat (the legs and the drumsticks). Present your hungry guests with a delicious and tidy bird.

How To Cook a Quick and Easy Perfect Turkey on Howcast

Take the stress out of your Thanksgiving dinner showpiece when you roast up a moist, golden bird.

You Will Need

A 12- to 14-pound kosher or self-basting turkey (to feed roughly 10 people)
A roasting pan with a rack insert
Aluminum foil
A large plate
An instant-read thermometer
4 tbsp. olive oil or melted unsalted butter
A pastry brush
Kitchen twine
Silicone potholders
Large plastic bags
A sharp knife, cutting board, and serving tray
Paper towels

Uncooked meat is a salmonella risk. To avoid infection or cross-contamination, wash your hands thoroughly after touching raw turkey.

Step 1: Thaw your bird

If you purchased a frozen bird, thaw it in the fridge. Allow one day of thaw time for every five pounds of turkey.

Tip: Never thaw a turkey on a countertop or at room temperature. It’ll become a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria.

Step 2: Preheat

Move your oven rack to the lowest possible position and preheat your oven to 400º.

Step 3: Cover the rack insert

Cover your roasting pan’s rack insert with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Use a sharp knife to cut a thin slit between each bar on the rack so that fat can escape into the bottom of the pan. Return the rack to the pan.

Step 4: Rinse the bird

Remove the giblets bag, which is stuffed inside the turkey, and rinse the bird inside and out with cold running water. Rest the wet turkey on a large plate, and use paper towels to pat it dry.

Tip: Your bird may not have a giblets bag.

Step 5: Coat the bird with butter

Using the pastry brush, coat the breast with two tablespoons of oil or melted butter, and tie the legs together with kitchen twine. Place the bird breast-side down on the rack. Coat the back of the turkey with the rest of the butter or oil.

Step 6: Roast the turkey

Place the turkey in the oven, and relax for about 45 minutes. Kosher and self-basting birds have already been salted and treated, so you don’t need to fuss over them.

Step 7: Flip the bird

Remove the turkey from the oven. Using clean silicone potholders, lift the turkey, flip it, and put it back on the rack breast-side up. Return it to the oven for 45 minutes to an hour, or until the breast registers 165º and the thigh is about 175º.

Tip: Measure the temperature at the thickest part of the breast or thigh. Make sure the thermometer only touches meat, not bone.

Step 8: Rest

Remove the turkey from the oven, and let it rest for about a half an hour. When it’s cooled, move it to a cutting board, carve it up, and serve a delicious bird to your hungry guests!

The automatic timer that comes in many turkeys is designed to pop up around 185º — 10 to 20 degrees higher than recommended.

Cut a Hole in the Pumpkin

The first step is hollowing out the pumpkin. Use a keyhole saw to cut the hole. If you'll be using a candle for illumination, you can cut the hole in the pumpkin's top (always put the candle in a high-sided glass, and never leave unattended). For electric lights, make the hole in the bottom or side so you can hide the cord.

Scoop Out the Flesh

Scoop out flesh, pulp, and seeds with a plaster scraper or fleshing tool.

Transfer Your Design

Now it's time to transfer your selected designs (use one of our pumpkin templates or draw your own). Affix it to the pumpkin, and trace the design by poking holes with a sharp awl, needle tool, or T-pin.

Carve the Features

Remove the template and carve along the pattern with a miniature saw or linoleum carving tool. If you want to make holes in the pumpkin for eyes, use a drill equipped with a 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch spade bit.

You can also get creative with patterns and designs using these pumpkin-carving tools.

If desired, place candles, small flashlights, or battery-operated light sources inside your pumpkin.

Tip: Prevent exposed areas of the pumpkin's flesh from turning brown by applying a film of Vaseline.

How to Light a Pumpkin

To illuminate a carved pumpkin, string lights are preferable to candles for most designs: Wrap a strand of 20 lights around a glass jar, and secure wires with tape. Cut a hole in the hollowed-out pumpkin for the cord, and place jar inside. Unplug lights before leaving the house or going to sleep. If using a candle, place it in a glass or votive holder, and cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin for ventilation (or leave the top off). Battery-operated candles are another good alternative.

5. Fill cellophane bag with candy and tape close; then place cellophane bag inside white lunch bag.

6. Fold top over and secure with double-sided tape.

Pumpkin Treat Bag How-ToTools and Materials

Orange mini craft bag

1. Fill orange mini craft bag with candy.

2. Cinch and twist top of bag together to form stem; you can trim off 1/2 inch of bag for your desired length.

3. Cut off a piece of floral tape and stretch it so it becomes sticky.

4. Wrap floral tape around stem. Start at the top and move downward. Rip off tape; leave 3 to 4 extra inches hanging on the bottom.

5. Twist extra tape into a tendril and wrap it around finger until it curls.
